Hmm we might just have to disagree to some extent then :)

A part of me agrees with you and a part doesn't. Judging whatever experience you have might shouldn't be what you've paid for it as that has nothing to do with the experience per se. Then again, if I pay DKK 1,000 for a 1 person dinner (no wine) at e.g. Den lille fede I would be disappointed in what I got, but if I got what Geranium served for DKK 300 I would be overwhelmed.

That might not be a question of how the experience (food) was, but for me it would be a factor in judging the experience.

I find it a bit hard to express ...

Interesting indeed!

Hmm. I honestly say that the environment, the wine, the location, the waiters, the loo, and the food not least, it's the whole image of the restaurant, the way the place is branding itself. This is how I get expectations towards what kind of experience I imagine or expect to be able to get. And this is where I might feel let down once in a while, if a restaurant is not honest about what their purpose is, if they promise something that they don't deliver.

For example, the pasta dish I got at a one Michelin star place in Rome, they served the course not warm. Of course it wasn't cold as it had just been cooked, but in my book that's unacceptable. (OK five people ordering five different pasta variations is cruel, but still). If the tepid food was served at a more simple place, I wouldn't be as surprised - and disappointed.

I honestly say it's not about the money.

The ball is with you, now, Allan :-)

If you pay DKK 500 for a meal that's much better than a meal you pay DKK 2,000 for, then I'd be disappointed in the DKK 2,000 meal. All things aside of course it's a judgement of the food itself and not what you pay for it.

...then again, is it ever just a question of judging the food? Can you honestly say the environment, the companionship, the wine, the location, the waiters etc. don't influence the food? :)

Interesting discussion.

Hi Trine,

Yes I have 5 screens ;-)

I use to have 8 - but it was simply too many as I had to look up and down all day long. My neck started to hurt and I got rid of some of the '19-inch screens, which I have replaced with three big '24 inches. I use 4 of the screens active - the last one I just look at 4-5 times a day.

Unfortunately I don't have the article from the Fine Wine Magazine. But feel free to ask if there is anything you want to know about glasses in general.

You have 5 dull screens? Then I suppose I should just feel lucky with my only 2.

Many thanks for your sweet comment. Always appreciate that.

Also thank you for your note about the champagne glass. You wouldn't by chance have a link to that article you wrote for Fine Wine Magazine, would you? I would like to see it.

It should be forbidden to read such a review, when you sit hungry at work, in front of 5 boring computer screens.

Thank you Trine, for making me hungry with this great description of Geranium.

The place is almost too good to be true.

I will have to visit again soon.

Best from,

Thomas

Chuck,
Wow - Thanks very much for your comment. I really appreciate it. Just back from Rome I must say that we are quite blessed here in CPH - I mean as far as restaurants with good food, although they don't all serve truffles ;-) .

Dennis,
Thank you, sooo kind of you :-D . Well the photos definitely help my memory and a lunch is always easier to recall (probably something with the amount of wine consumed ;-) ).
Did you get the lamb too? I suspect the dinner would not be the same as the lunch. But I might be wrong.

Allan,
Yup, lovely that lamb. And I forgot about the picture and to put a note on the bread. Really wanted to, because is was wonderful, tasted home made and comprised what I adore with bread: A crispy crunch and a moist inside, slightly oily and heavy. I have uploaded a picture to my images page.

I agree with you that disappointments in restaurants is closely connected to what expectation you may have. But I don't think it's a matter of economics. I was actually disappointed about a place I went to in Rome, but not in comparison with the money I paid. I expected more delicious food. It was the food itself that let me down. I'm planning to gather my Rome experiences into one post and will elaborate there.

Also, in Rome I had a fantastic experience which I suspect will strip me totally (haven't yet seen the bill), but no matter the cost, I feel like I would not have been without this opportunity. So... :-D

It's great to hear you enjoyed Geranium. The lamb was absolutely lovely when we visited Geranium and I'm pleased to hear it's a favourite of yours as well. It was so tasty and it seems yours was a great bite too.

With respect to disappointment in restaurants I suppose it's a matter of how much money you pay for the experience as well as the expectations and lastly the comparisons to other restaurants. When you pay that much money for a dinner you're allowed to have some expectations and it can be hard for the restaurant to fully live up to these - whether the expectations are made prior to the visit or if it's a comparison or whatnot. In general I agree that one shouldn't be disappointed but it can happen in my opinion.

Again, great photos. You didn't get a plate/knife made of cedar tree? I believe it was hand made and the smell of it was very cool.

Wow... amazing photos and a splendid report. Now I regret leaving my camera at home when visiting Geranium that same evening even more.

I'm amazed at the details of information you get out of your visits, evnen the name of the silverware. I consider myself lucky if I can remember the name of the last wine after a meal like that :-)

Cheers,
Dennis

That looks like a wonderful meal. Next year I will have to make it up to that part of the world - some of the restaurants and their food look very exciting.

(Very nice pics too)
